The science behind the calculator
FurTimer uses the logarithmic formula human age = 16 ln(dog age) + 31, a model popularized from DNA methylation research into canine aging. It is a better educational estimate than multiplying by seven because it reflects rapid early development followed by a slower aging curve.
The formula is not a diagnosis and cannot predict an individual dog's future. That is why FurTimer also asks for breed size. Size helps translate the human-age estimate into practical life stages and typical lifespan ranges.
Who built it and why
FurTimer is written from the perspective of a pet owner who has watched dogs move from chaotic puppy days into soft-faced senior years. The goal is simple: make reliable dog-age information feel clear, kind, and useful before a vet visit, not cold or confusing.
Why knowing your dog's age matters
Vet visits
Life stage helps guide wellness exams, screening, dental care, and preventive discussions.
Diet
Puppies, adults, mature dogs, and seniors often need different calorie and nutrient strategies.
Exercise
Age-aware movement keeps dogs fit while protecting growing joints and aging bodies.
